Turf grass Spring Greenup

Turf grass Spring Greenup

While it is the end of May and many warm-season grass species have greened-up, some
bermudagrass and zoysia grass lawns still have a significant amount of old, brown, leaf material
in them. This is likely the result of several compounding factors.

The impact of last fall’s long, hot, dry weather are likely affecting green-up this season, especially in non-irrigated lawns. A second factor influencing green-up could be all the rainfall this winter. Water is a good buffer of heat. Meaning that it takes more energy (i.e. from the sun) to warm a wet soil than a dry soil. To
date, the average 4-inch soil temperature for the entire month of May in Griffin, GA – central for
the state – is 71.2 F.

That is 5.6 F lower than for the same time last year. Similarly, the
average maximum air temperature this May has been 8 F cooler than May 2019. Lastly, of the
pictures, descriptions, and observations I have made, the lawns with considerable brown have a
higher mowing height than is recommended for bermudagrass and zoysia grass.

The mowing range should be 1.0 to 2.0 inches. The extra leaf canopy and thatch can act as an insulator, like the pink stuff in your attic and walls, preventing the sun’s energy from warming the soil quickly.
For these lawns I have suggested the grass be mowed as low as possible and remove all the leaf
biomass.

The objective is to open the turf canopy, permitting sunlight to reach the soil surface.
Taking it a step further, consider core aerification. Opening holes into the soil profile permits
warm air into the root zone, warming the soil from the inside-out. By warming the soil,
rhizomes will initiate new shoots, eventually reaching the soil surface and thickening the lawn.

Weed Control Update

May 2020

Spring is arriving fast this year with the onslaught of rain during 2020 weed are her and growing fast the spring weather is here.  For DIYer's that have don nothing then you still have  a chance.

DIY Person #1
No Weed Control Started in 2020

I suggest you start with a basic weed control granular such as the Wal-Mart Expert Lawn Weed Control (same as the Scott's) This will you a blanket kill of most weeds in your yard.  This will not kill POA use Nutsedge if you want to treat POA if not it will die with the rise in heat on it's own. If would like to use a liquid I suggest Spectacide Plus , Ortho Weed B Gon both products you mix in a tank or use the one where you can attach to end of water hose.

This is for you if you DID NOT PRE EMERGE IN FALL OF 2019 LIKE THE MOW COACH!

Hey you DIY'ers this is a quick post for you to get in some great weed control for great value I just found! For all of you people like The Mow Coach I did not Pre Emerge during the right time the year in the fall Sept/Oct.

This fix will be for the lawns that did not  Pre Emerge or you did Pre Emerge and it got washed away and was not as effective if you had had rain like we have in GA.  During one my weekly walks (because it was raining) at the local Ace Hardware I found the a cheap effective fix for yard that has active weeds growing and need to be treated before the HOA contact you!

Again this is for the yard that has active weeds growing such as clover, thistle, henbit, and POA or broadleaf weeds in general.  This fix will not kill POA.  That will require another treatment that expensive if you choose but POA will die out with the heat if you can tolerated for a few months just keep it cut till the Bermuda come in!

Back to the the fix!  Scotts make a 14lb bag of Weed control for lawns that cost about 18.97 at your local Ace Hardware , Home Depot and Lowe's.  This product is a post emergent which kills over 200 weeds ACTIVELY GROWING.

Kills even the toughest weeds, like dandelion and clover. Specially formulated to control more than 200 weed types. Starts working on contact.

Do you have green grass growing in you Bermuda right now!

THEN YOU HAVE WEEDS

What does pre-emergent mean? It's an herbicide applied to the ground to stop emergence/sprouting of weed seeds so that you never even see the weeds.
What does post-emergent mean? It's an herbicide applied directly to existing, visible weeds to kill them once they have already sprouted.
So what does all this mean in a nut shell?  Jan/Feb is the time of the year that you should be applying your Pre-emergent to stop the grow of weeds before they come?  Weed spread tiny seeds that you cannot see in the roots that may not germinate until months or even two years later.  If you choose not to apply or missed the fall post emergence that's why you have Green Winter Weeds! We've had so much rain in Atlanta the weeds have come out early in 2019.

THE MOW COACH can help you with that question!

Step 1 you should go to your local hardware store and purchase a pre-emergent such as LESCO Stonewall 0.43% 0-0-7 Ac Sgn24 used by MowTime Lawn Care.  Apply this using your standard spreader setting 4. It's ok if you have rain this will also give you a light fertilization of your lawn as well.  This will start the process to preventing your weeds later in the year.
Step 2 purchase a Post Emergent such as Lockup 0.03% 0-0-7M 50lb this will kill any existing weeds that are already showing in your yard right now. I REPEAT IF YOU HAVE WEEDS NOW YOU MUST COMPLETE BOT STEPS to treat your yard. If your yard is clear of weeds now then only complete step one.  This can also be applied to Tall Fescue Lawns as well.  Please send me your questions, comment as well as your tips on how you can tree these early winter weeds.
